“Mr. Mat. Yocum and Miss May, youngest daughter of Capt. C.V. Rogers, were married at the family residence, near Talala, last Sunday afternoon at four o’clock, Judge Watt Starr officiating. Mat is a royal good fellow and has a host of friends who will congratulate him on his good fortune in securing such an estimable partner for life’s journey.” [1]

Fire At Old Clem Rogers Home 6th and Muskogee

“Fire At Old Rogers Home

“Vacant House Sixth and Muskogee Partially Destroyed by Flames Thursday.

“Quick work on the part of the Claremore Fire Department last night probably saved the vacant two story house on 6th and Muskogee – owned by Iran Moore and commonly known as the Clem Rogers Property from commplete destruction when fire of unknown origin broke out at the rear of the house at 12:30 Thursday morning.

“Estimated damage on the place was said to be around $100.00.

“Although the property has for a number of years been occupied and is little better than a fire trap at the present time, it has historical value in being at one time the home of Clem Rogers, father of Will Rogers. It was in this home in the spring of 1899 that Mrs. Clem Rogers (*SEE NOTE), mother of Will Rogers (???), fell down the steep stairs of the home and sustained injuries from which she never fully recovered and which [was] probably indirectly responsible for her death.

“Although careful investigation by local fire department they were unable to ascertain the cause and origin of the fire. There was no evidence that it was incendiary.

“Claremore can well afford to be proud of her fire department which by speed and management has time after time prevented property loss in this city. There are few cities of this size that maintain fire protection such as Claremore does.” [i]

*NOTE: Clem Rogers married twice. I would suggest this was Mary Almeda Bible Rogers, Clem Rogers 2nd wife, who died 17 Jan 1900, instead of Clem’s first wife Mary America Schrimsher Rogers, mother of Will Rogers, who died 28 May 1890.
